2011 Goals

In 2010, I really only had one goal, read 60 books ... and I couldn't even reach that. O for 1. Ouch.

This year, I'm going to set a few more goals in hopes of at least having something I can say I accomplished. Beware, some of these goals may seem really odd or arbitrary, but they make sense to me. I'll try to explain a bit, but feel free to ask why. :)

Read 60 Books

This was my goal last year and I didn't quite get there, although I made it pretty close. This year should be even busier for me so this is actually quite the intense goal.

Read at least two of these authors:

Tad Williams
Stephen R. Donaldson
Glen Cook

This is not something I'm proud to admit, but I've yet to read any of these heavy hitters of the genre. I do, however, own books by all three.

Read one of these books by Melanie Rawn:

The Golden Key [US] [UK] (by Rawn, Fallon, Elliott), OR
Stronghold [US] [UK] (Dragon Star Book 1)

I loved the Dragon Prince trilogy and for some reason I've never read another thing by Rawn. I own both of these and I still can't believe I've never read the Dragon Star trilogy.

Read at least one of these trilogies:

The Coldfire Trilogy [US] [UK] by C.S. Friedman
The Rai Kirah Trilogy [US] [UK] by Carol Berg

Both have been staring at me for way too long. Something's gotta happen this year.

Read further in The Dark Tower series by Stephen King

I've only read The Gunslinger (Review) so far, thought I'd get to more last year, and although I thought about the goal 'finish The Dark Tower series' I decided to be a bit more realistic. (Just 1 book = further, although I'd prefer more)

Read further in The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher

Again, I'm copping out with my use of the term "further". I've read up through Grave Peril (Book 3) and it's about time I head back. I have the next two on my shelf waiting.

There's probably more, so I'll get those up when I think of them. :)

Sounds like you've got a full reading year ahead of you. Good luck!

Haha, we'll see if any of these actually work out. :D

Last year my goal was to read 100 books, which I did, but this year I am dropping it down to 50. I am going to be a lot busier this year with a lot less travel to and from work so hopefully 50 is achievable.

One of my other goals is a very broad one - simply to read more science fiction from the mid 19th to the mid 20th century. I figure if I aim low no matter what happens I can say I achieved my goal.

Good luck with yours, I hope you complete them :-)

I've heard "The Gunslinger" is quite good. I need to check that one out.

Good luck on your goals! I'm crossing my fingers for you.

I loved the first three Dark Tower books, but only made it halfway through the fourth. I kept it around for a long time, but finally decided life is too short to force myself to read something I wasn't enjoying, especially when there is an endless supply of books waiting to be read. I don't regret the first three, though, I still think about those, and I read them close to 20 years ago.

You should definitely read Tad Williams. He's one of my favorites! I've read part of Melanie Rawn's Exile series and really liked it. I've seen the Dragon Prince in stores more than I've seen her other books.

@Becky - Yeah, it's gonna be one of those years, I can just feel it. :) Good luck too.

@Cat - Thanks Cat, I enjoyed The Gunslinger and I hear the next two are even better. And then I hear the next 4 are not as good. :D

@Susan - That is so good to hear. I think they're moving up the list even more. Although I'm worried about going further than the next two (as noted above as well).

@Abi - I own Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn and I just need to get to it already. It's a classic series, come on. :) Dragon Prince was really good imo, although I've heard some people call it a bit dated.

Bryce, you are not the only one who missed his 2010 reading goals. I wanted to read six books per month and I failed.

My 2011 reading goal is totally different.
Let me quote a part of my post:
"I estimate I can spend an average of two hours per day for reading within a year.
One year = 365 days
Two hours reading per day multiplied by 365 days equals 730 hours
I'm not the fastest reader. My limit is around 35 pages per hour.
730 hours multiplied by 35 pages equals 25550 pages

25550 pages mean how many books? It is impossible to say because the umber of pages per book differ a lot.
Let's assume an average of 375 pages per book.
Then I would read 25550 pages divided by 375 pages = 68 books - never read so many books within one year.
Anyway it does not matter how many books ..... I'm totally nosy how many pages I will read in 2011.
You can follow my progress. I added the information in the right column of the blog. It will be updated weekly."

From my point of view a goal like I read 60 books in a year is not significant. It makes a difference whether you read 60 books with 100 pages each or 60 books with 1000 pages each.

I think goals like I want to read this series or to read books from specific authors are good ones.

Anyway I wish you good look with your 60 book goal. And never forget: ENJOY READING :-)

Awesome points. I used to keep track of the pages and I might have to do it again. I also like that you posted your progress in the side bar. I may have to copy you. :)

I've read Tad Williams, and I tried to read Donaldson, but found the writing too depressing. Good luck with your goals!

Read more Urban Fantasy and you'll get there easily.

Well, I do not really believe this will have success.
